Lane Theatre - Musical Wanderlust
Charles Burney, (born April 7, 1726, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, died April 12, 1814, Chelsea, Middlesex) was an organist, composer, and the foremost music historian of his time in England.
Until 1776, no history of music existed in the English language. To equip himself to fill the gap, Burney set off on two long journeys in 1770 and 1772, to Italy, France, Germany, Bohemia (Czechia), Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands. He researched in libraries and archives, spoke to personalities in the musical world (and even got invited to King Frederick the Great’s palace in Prussia), attended musical events, and subsequently published accounts of both tours.
You’ll be taken on a Baroque musical voyage following Burney on his journey: a kaleidoscope of European Baroque music with compositions from each of the countries Burney visited, interspersed with readings of his original 18th century diary entries and anecdotes from his travels.
London Handel Festival - re:invention
re:invention is an exciting and inventive programme, showcasing music dazzling from the Baroque, deconstructing it, reinterpreting it, and reassembling it with other works to create something new.
Composers like Handel, Bach, Telemann, and Quantz were often inspired by each other’s works and adopted melodies, bass lines, harmony, and texts for their own works in a similar or sometimes almost identical way. This continues to happen even today, as composers and artists take inspiration from the Baroque and rework it to be their own. re:invention highlights these links by not only showing similarities between music in the Baroque period but also by pairing modern songs with their Baroque roots.

Bachfest Leipzig: re:invention

CIMA Semifinals “Man and Nature”
This programme explores the splendour and ferocity of the four elements when driven to their extremes by mankind. Linked together through 18th century poetry, each element is represented in an evocative suite, combining different composers’ ideas on how to depict them musically. It captures the beauty of the planet we live on, but also how climate change affects and endangers it.
